Zongzi (Chinese Sticky Rice Dumpling)

Zongzi is sticky rice with sweet or savory filling wrapped with bamboo leaves. There are mainly two types of Zongzi. The sweet Zongzi is usually stuffed with red beans and Chinese dates. The savory Zongzi is filled with

salted egg yolks, chestnuts, and most importantly meat. Furthermore, Zongzi is a classical treat for the Dragon boat festival. Most people believe that the festival is the date to ward off the plague and to commemorate the poet Qu Yuan. He was a loyal, patriotic, and highly esteemed minister form the State of Chu more than 2000 years ago. However, he drowned himself in a river as being vilified. Therefore, people would throw Zongzi in the spot where Qu Yuan drowned himself, hoping that the fish would eat the Zongzi instead of Qu Yuan’s body. Lastly, I chose this dish because I like the fragrance of the sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, and I also enjoy the progress of making it.
